DOOM Fire. In Visual FoxPro 9. Seriously. 🔥

I was watching a YouTube video explaining how the original DOOM fire effect works.

No fancy animation. No video files. Just 37 colours, a grid of numbers and some very clever mathematics.

And naturally, I thought…

“Hang on. Could I do that in Visual FoxPro?”

Well, apparently, yes. 😂

We’ve now got a working procedural fire simulation running entirely in VFP9. The flames flicker, rise and change continuously, all generated in real time.

And surprisingly, it looks rather good!

The plan? See whether we can use it to give the enormous mothership in Galactic Gladiators some seriously impressive engine exhaust.

Is this a sensible use of a database programming language from the 1990s?

Absolutely not.

But I’m doing it because it’s difficult. And it’s stupid.

More soon…
