This is your biggest obstacle to success….

There is one thing that is most probably stopping you from achieving your goals. If you don’t sort this issue out you will never be truly successful in anything.  It doesn’t matter how brilliant you are, what qualities you possess, or opportunities that come your way, the results will be the same.

Honestly, go with me on this one, I absolutely promise that this is the number one reason that will be  holding you back. If you’re struggling this will be most likely be the cause.

If you haven’t already guessed, the problem is you! If you don’t truly believe in yourself and your ability to succeed, no matter what, then you will simply not get anywhere. Your subconscious will always find a way to make you right. It loves to serve you. You’ll find things won’t go your way no matter how hard to try. Your subconscious doesn’t care which you believe, it’s a slave to you, whatever your subconscious thinks you want it will try to give you exactly what it thinks you want. Good or bad, success or failure.

Are you afraid of failing? When I was at school, I was always discouraged to try new things or to set my sites too high, “we don’t want to fail do we?”, well now I’m older  and can think for myself, I now see that failure can be good! That is if you learn from your mistakes, and never give up. This life is a journey not a destination.

“I haven’t failed, I’ve found 10,000 ways that don’t work” Thomas Edison

Are you scared of failing, or even worse, are you actually frightened of being a success?

Let’s play a quick game, let’s find out how you really feel about money:

Imagine you’re in your hotel room, there is a knock at the door, you open the door, you see there is a suitcase just sitting there in the doorway. Attached to the suitcase is a label with your name on it. You look up and down the corridor, but there’s no one about. Reluctantly you take the suitcase inside your room, and close the door.

Would you open the suitcase? I would, and I think if you’re honest you would too! What’s inside?

The suitcase is crammed full of money, 1 million pounds!  Oh, and a note addressed to you.

The note says that the money is for you, there are no strings attached, there are no conditions except that you mustn’t tell anyone about how you came about the money, there is no income tax to pay, the money is yours to keep. The money isn’t stolen and everything is above-board.

Lie back, and imagine the scene, how does it make you feel? Do you feel guilty, happy, nervous, apprehensive, really try to get in touch with how you feel now you have all this money.

A surprising number of people have negative feelings about their experience with money, are you one of them? Has this experience surprised you?

So you really need to convince yourself that you will succeed, if you don’t believe it no one else will, so just how do you go about doing this?

Whether you think you can or think you can’t — you are right.  Henry Ford

If fear is stopping you doing the things you really want to do, because you don’t want to be seen as a failure, I heartily recommend the book “Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway” by Susan Jeffers. This is a classic self-help book, that was written 25 years ago, it takes you through the concept that it’s normal to feel fear but you should work through it. It teaches that the more capable you are the less there is to fear. You should use fear as an opportunity to conquer new challenges. It also has a great section on making decisions, arguing that most of us when looking at making a decision concentrate on what we are likely to lose, rather it argues that all decisions are good, it’s up to you to make it work.

Me, I need to overcome my fear of recording myself on video for my blog, I’m not a shy person at all, (I think my family and friends would laugh at very idea) but I’ve recently realised I’m not at all happy filming myself. I think I need to do some work on this issue, I’ll let you know how I get on a future blog post. It’s a work in progress….

Affirmations work for some people, write a list of positive statements about you and your success, write in the present tense, read them out loud to yourself every morning and night. Try to say them like you really mean them, your subconscious will take on board what you say. Give it a try, you might be surprised at the results.

Another idea is to try a mind programming cd, I’ve used some of Dick Sutphens Hypnosis CDs to change some deep-rooted negative beliefs I had, it’s different for everyone,  they worked well for me but it’s not a quick fix. My partner has had even better results with them, and rates them very highly.

Talk to any successful person, and you’ll discover that they have had a catalogue of failures on their road to being successful, that’s how they got there, by learning along the way, tweaking and changing things until they made it. In the mid fifties Colonel Harland Sanders drove around America trying to get interest in his chicken recipe. Apparently he’d been forced to sell his motel/restaurant business and was living in his car. He’d decided that instead of selling the rights he’d licence his recipe, this was unheard of at the time, he is reported to have tried over 1000 restaurants before one said yes to his idea. That’s what I call perseverance. The idea went on to become Kentucky Fried Chicken. You might have heard of them!

So I hope you can see that the biggest obstacle to your success is you, but with some soul-searching and some hard work looking inside yourself you will be able to see what beliefs are blocking you, and you can do some work to put it right.

Until next time…
