Spamalot! As your blog gets more visitors do this..
As you get more traffic coming to your blog, your amount of spam will increase. This can become really annoying, the last thing you want, is for your visitors to have to skip through a ton of spam messages.
I have Askimet Plugin installed, so far it’s correctly identified 36 spam comments. Comments that it believes  to be spam, are placed in a queue, for you to approve or delete. You can also set up Askimet to automatically discard spam on posts after a month.
Installation of Askimet is straight forward, but the plugin also needs a WordPress.com API key. This key is sent to you via email when you register free at www.wordpress.com for an account, the key is individual to you like a password and should not be shared.
Once you have installed Askimet plugin, activated it, and got your WordPress API key, you need to go into Askimet Configuration to enter they key, and decide whether you want comments Askimet identifies as spam to be deleted after a month.
So far Askimet has worked well to identify spam comments on my blog. But what about stopping them from being posted in the first place?
I’ve just installed a plugin called Cookies for Comments, This plugin adds a stylesheet to your blog’s html source code. When a browser loads that stylesheet a cookie is dropped. If that user then leaves a comment the cookie is checked. If it doesn’t exist the comment is marked as spam.
I’ve only just installed Cookies for comments, so I’ll let you know how it works out.
If you find these plugins useful or have any other good plugins for spam or anything else you want to share, why not drop me a comment?
I’d love to here from you.
