South African pigeon ‘faster than broadband’

The internet has certainly made it a small world, it’s now easy to communicate with people more or less anywhere in the world.

However, in  south Africa it seems that broadband is no faster than a pigeon, they obviously still have some way to go.

An IT company from Durban set up the test, pitting an 11 month old pigeon armed with a 4GB memory stick, against  South Africas biggest webfirm Telkom.

The Pigeon called Winston took only 1 hour and 8 minutes to deliver the memory stick over the 60 miles, and it took a further hour to transfer form the memory stick to the computer at the other end,  in that time the ADSL only managed to transfer 4% of the data.

According to the BBC “South Africa is one of the countries hoping to benefit from three new fibre optic cables being laid around the African continent to improve internet connections”, thank god.
