More spam anyone? no, I think we’ve had enough already

In my last post, I told you about some of the plugins I have installed on my blog to prevent spam comments.

If you don’t already know, an IP address is a unique number that everyone gets who’s logged onto the internet. Peoples IP address either doesn’t change (called static)  or they are allocated a new number by their internet service provider each time they connect to the internet (dynamic).

The blog was getting spam comments from the same few ip addresses on a daily basis, so I installed a plugin called WP Security Scan. It’s an impressive spam filter, that even has an option for an IP Address block list. I couldn’t get the option to work though, so will be resorting to blocking spam IP addresses from my domain name Control Panel. More on this in a future post.

A look at a typical spam comment below reveals the spammers ipaddress:

To look up the ipaddress 194.8.75.41, we can browse over to http://whatismyipaddress.com/ and enter the ip address we are interested in.

 It’s results are certainly interesting.

I’ve now gone the whole hog, and installed a plugin called WP-reCAPTCHA. This installs CAPTCHA onto a WordPress blog. Like some of the other plugins, you need to register at https://admin.recaptcha.net/and enter your individual private & public keys in the settings-> reCAPTCHA screen from your WordPress Administration Screen. Not only will you be stopping spam, you’ll also be helping to transfer texts from books onto digital records. This  is ingenious. Every time WP-reCAPTCHA is used, you helping transfer a book onto the digital archives.

As far as spam goes, a random word or words that be entered for a comment to be posted. This should in theory stop the bots automatically posting their spam. So far, it’s been 100% effective.

Not sure if it’s a step too far though, would it stop you from posting a comment? I’m not sure if people who post are going to see it as a pain in the neck?

What do think? Do us a favour & let me know if you think CAPTCHA is a good idea or not.

I’d love to hear your views

A spam free Rob

  2. Lots of of bloggers not very pleased with the new iPad.There was just 2 much hoopla regarding it and alot people got turned off.Quite frankly, I for one see lots of the cool potential uses of the gadget. Third-party apps for working with music, games, papers and magazine and books, tons of neat stuff, but IMHO they failed to sell it right (aside from the books). It feels kind of unfinished
