How secure is your blog? This is the best way to find out..
Following on from my last post about the importance of backing up your blog, another equally important issue you need to consider is your blogs secuirity.
WP Security Scan is a plugin that checks your blogs secuirity and gives you advice on how to solve any breaches it finds.
One of my fellow Alex Jeffreys students recently had their blogs hacked, fortunately all they lost was their about me page information. It could have been much worse.
It is important at this point to mention that you must backup your blog, see my prevous post about this
After you have backed up your blog & installed the plugin, after installation, a new option will be added called “Security”
Click the new option, and the plug in will give you a list of results based on your current blog security.
The “plugin” will check you have the latest version of Wordpress installed, that you have changed the supervisor username from Admin to somthing else, and that your table prefix has been renamed from wp_. It also makes sure your WordPress version is successfully hidden, WordPress DB Errors turned off, WP ID META tag is removed form WordPress core, and that the file .htaccess exists in wp-admin/.
Follow the advice the plugin reports to you, and you will end up with a more secure blog.

The idea is if you change the default of your Wordpress database files to something else other than wp_ it makes it harder for someone to hack these files.
“Your table prefix should not be wp_. Click here to change it.”
You click on the link explaining how to do this using the plugin. wp-config must be set to writable before running this script.
the database user you’re using with WordPress must have ALTER rights
Here’s how to do it manually, but take a backup first!

Yes, the blog is all my own work. two months ago I didn’t know the 1st thing about how to setup a blog, so I’m quite pleased with it. Keep wondering wether it’s time to spend a bit of money on a professional looking header though.
